Adnams Dry Hopped Lager

Rating: 3.0

This one is a pale lager from Adnams that I’ve had my eye on with a view to buy since it was launched in late 2013, I had been waiting on the price to fall some before I took the plunge though. I finally spotted a bottle of what was my sixth different Adnams in a Morrisons supermarket a couple of weeks ago with the price sitting at 99p so I decided to give it a go and sampled it at a barbecue later the same evening. The beer is one of countless attempt by large UK breweries to try to get a piece of the craft beer market but it has at least managed to prove its worth by winning a gold medal at the 2014 International Beer Challenge.

Adnams Dry Hopped Lager

Appearance (3/5): Light and fairly clear bodied, this one is amber in colour and looks quite bright with a quarter centimetre tall head that’s a foamy white and turns slightly patchy after about a minute.
Aroma (6/10): Moderate citrus hops and a slightly sweet aroma kick things off, some basic malts and a hint of vanilla aren’t far behind though. The beer has some peach and orange notes coming through but these were both quite faint before some light tropical notes rounded things off.
Taste (6/10): Citrus and faint grapefruit hops start things with some faint tropical flavours coming through. The beer isn’t the strongest and nothing is overly pronounced, there is the odd bit of sweetness on top of some basic lager malts and grassy hops as well as a few background fruits.
Palate (3/5): Fairly light bodied, maybe a touch thin, with a slight tang and average carbonation levels. It wasn’t a hard one to drink but that was probably because it was quite thin and basic though and it was rounded off with some light bitterness at the end.

Overall (12/20): Quite a plain tasting beer that was almost like a lager/IPA hybrid with the faint hops coming through early on before fading quite fast. It was a smooth but ultimately quite a thin beer and it’s not likely I’ll pick it up again, it was a little plain for my liking.
