The 3rd Pill

Rating: 4.0

Another beer that I picked up in a Ljubljana bottle shop now, this one is from the Pelicon brewery based in the Gorizia region of Slovenia and is a brewery that’d it noted down to be on the look out before my visit to the country. This one is an American IPA that was first brewed in 2013 and is one that I grabbed thinking I’d not get an opportunity to do so again but as it happens I’ve actually seen this one available once in Scotland upon my return; thankfully it was one that I enjoyed when I first tried it though so I’ve no complaints. The beer was one of a few recommend to me by the cashier when I visited Pivoteka Za popen’t on my last full day in Ljubljana and I sampled it later the same night, back at the hotel after letting it chill some and it’ll be my thirteenth review of a beer from Slovenia, not bad for a tiny country in Europe.

Pelicon The 3rd Pill

Appearance (4/5): Light caramel amber in colour with a foamy, one centimetre tall head that is quite with a few bubbles running through it; the body is semi-cloudy and there is good head retention over the opening couple of minutes.
Aroma (8/10): Strong pine and grapefruit hops with quite a lot of mango to start things off, there is some citrus too early on and the beer has quite a fresh, lively nose with some floral notes appearing around the middle. There was some nice caramel notes and malts around the middle as well and the beer seemed sweet but also hoppy with a good balance.
Taste (8/10): Sweet caramel malts and some resinous pine kick things off with the taste, there was quite a hoppy taste to the beer with plenty of citrus and orange flavours making an appearance before some sweet, ripe fruits showed themselves. I could detect some mango and apricot coming through with quite a few tropical fruits and some biscuit malts towards the end.
Palate (4/5): Light-medium bodied and with a slightly sticky-sweet feel to proceedings, the beer had above average carbonation but was perhaps a touch lighter in places than I’d expected. Some strong hops and good sweetness from the malts and sugars gave the beer a nice balance and it was quite an easy one to drink.

Overall (16/20): This one was a really enjoyable and pleasantly well-balance IPA that was perhaps a touch sweeter than expected but still remained easy to drink with a nice orange and mango taste that blended well together, going down very easily.
