Birra Moretti Alla Friulana

Rating: 2.6

Alla Friulana is the second beer to fall under the Birra Moretti banner that I’ve added a review of here recently, the beer follows on from their Alla Siciliana which I tried a day or two prior to this offering while I was in Venice in August of this year (it’s taking a lot longer than expected to upload my reviews though). The beer is actually the third from the brewery I have tried, their flagship pale lager being the other not already mentioned and this one will also be my tenth Italian beer overall which is fairly low considering it is such a big country and relatively close to the UK but not that many appear to make it over to the UK sadly. Again this wasn’t one I was expecting all that much from but I was surprised after trying their Alla Siciliana version so when I spotted this one in the supermarket I thought I better at least give it a try.

Birra Moretti Alla Friulana

Appearance (3/5): Bright golden and sitting in the glass with a clear body, this one has a bubbly head that is white coloured and sits as more of a surface lacing before disappearing very quickly indeed.
Aroma (6/10): A fresh and summery aroma to this one with quite a lot of apples coming through alongside some strong citrus notes and a nice combination of pears and apples. There was some subtle hops sitting in the background too with a light sweetness and touches of bitter towards the end.
Taste (5/10): Again this one kicks off with quite a lot of apples coming through but that was expected really, there is a somewhat artificial taste to the beer though and I got a lot of sweetness too. There wasn’t quite as much citrus as I found with the nose and other than some light hay and grassy hops there wasn’t much else going on sadly.
Palate (2/5): Quite light bodied, perhaps a touch thin and almost watery with a slight citrus tang and quite a dry feel. Again the beer seemed artificial and a little forced with some faint bitterness and moderate carbonation but it was all a bit plain really.

Overall (10/20): This one was a fairly sweet but also quite basic beer that had a lot of artificial sweetness and sugars coming through without it being overly offensive or off-putting. The body was quite light which seemed to make it quite easy to drink but it certainly wasn’t all that enjoyable and reminded me of drinking a shot of Apple Sours at times, without as much of an alcohol kick anyway.
