Wychwood Pumpking

Rating: 2.4

Time now for what will be my sixth beer from the Wychwood brewery, I wasn’t aware that I’d already had five from them but it appears I have with the most recent being their Forest Fruits offering back in the summer of 2012 so it has been a while since I tried anything new from the brewery. Since we’re now in October I thought it about time to try my first of this years pumpkin beers after stumbling across this one in Morrisons a couple of weeks ago and noticing it was on special for some reason, odd since Halloween is still to come but I wasn’t complaining. The beer is one that now comes in at 3.8% abv. having previously been a 4.2% offering until the alcohol content was reduced slightly in 2013, having been as strong as 4.5% and 5.0% before that but hopefully the reduction in strength hasn’t had much of an impact on the taste of the beer.

Wychwood Pumpking

Appearance (3/5): Caramel amber in colour with a clear body and topped with a thin, foamy white head that just covers the surface of the beer.
Aroma (6/10): Caramel malts and some roasted malts ones with some touches of brown sugar that add further sweetness to proceedings. There was a nice earthy aroma that was followed by faint grassy hops and a little bitterness. The beer was nutty overall with some faint spice to close out the nose.
Taste (4/10): Quite a bitter and earthy taste to this one with some sweetness from the caramel malts that featured in the nose as well as a little added toffee. The beer had a toasted malt flavour around the middle that was backed up by some burnt sugars and subtle earthy hops plus a little spice.
Palate (2/5): Medium bodied and smooth for the most part, there is the odd touch of grain on top of quite a bitter body. The caramel malts and sugars added some sweetness to things and carbonation levels were about medium and there was a lingering bitterness to the finish.

Overall (8/20): This one turned out to be a pretty disappointing offering from Wychwood despite the beer starting okay with a nice enough looking body and an okay smell; it was still better than the bottle of Forest Fruits from the brewery I tried some time back but it wasn’t a great beer at all. The taste seemed far too bitter and overall things seemed quite weak; I’m glad this one was on special but it’s not one I’ll be picking up again.
