Brewdog U-Boat

Rating: 3.95

This special edition smoked porter is a collaborative effort brewed in Scotland by Brewdog with the help of Pennsylvania based Victory Brewing as a one-off brew that was released in August 2014. I managed to get hold of this one by ordering a bottle from the Brewdog website soon after its launch and I’ve held on to it since with the view of letting it age a little before cracking the bottle open. The beer will actually be the 89th Brewdog beer that I have reviewed and although I’ll not be listing it as a Victory offering, I’ve tried five of their beers in the past as well.

Appearance (4/5): This one pours a pitch black colour and it’s completely opaque with no light at all sneaking through. The head is a half centimetre, foamy looking one that is tan brown in colour and settles as a thin surface lacing that starts turning patchy after about thirty to forty seconds in.
Aroma (7/10): Dark malts kick things off with a lot of smoky notes and some oak coming through early on. There’s a lot of roasted notes plus some hints of chocolate and coffee as well but neither of these are particularly strong. It’s probably not quite as strong I’d be expecting but it certainly wasn’t a weak smelling beer either, there was some dark fruits and touches of sweetness to finish things off.
Taste (8/10): Quick a dark, smoky tasting beer with a touch of sweetness hitting you early thanks to a little vanilla and dark fruits coming through; most notably some raisins before some licorice and touches of chocolate come through. Some roasted malts featured as did some nice bitterness towards the end but the smoky flavours and dark malts dominated.
Palate (4/5): Quite a smooth and rich tasting beer with some nice sweetness coming through early on but the smoky flavours is what really grabs your attention with this one. There is some touches of bitterness in there and a medium body and similar carbonation levels and very little of the alcohol showing.

Overall (17/20): This one was a really nice smoked porter, possibly the first of this type of beer that I’ve tried since drinking Stone’s Smoked Porter a couple of years ago. The beer is definitely one that I enjoyed with the strong smoky flavours (naturally) and some good roasted malts coming through strongly but the beer still held a nice balance and went down more easily than an 8.4% beer should have; a great beer and one well worth trying.
