O’Hara’s Foreign Affair

Rating: 3.7

A summer 2015 limited release that was a collaboration between the Irish based Carlow Brewing Company and Starr Hill based in Crozet, Virginia in the United States. The beer is an IPA come red ale (merging the Irish red ale with the American IPA of the respective brewery’s homelands) that I managed to find while in Ireland over the Christmas holidays and since Carlow beers are ones that I always try to grab at least one of, I knew this was a beer that I’d like to sample. This one will be my sixth beer to fall under the O’Hara’s banner and I’m hoping it’s another good one from a brewery that I’ve always liked although whether it’s as good as their India Pale Ale or Irish Stout remains to be seen.

O'Hara's Foreign Affair

Appearance (4/5): Caramel amber with a fairly clear body and a half centimetre head that is foamy and slightly off-white in colour, turning slightly patchy in the centre after a minute or so.
Aroma (7/10): Quite a hoppy beer initially with some nice citrus and grapefruit notes to open things up before touches of pine start to come through. There was a few sweet malts early on as well and I managed to detect some caramel and sugars too. The beer was nicely balanced on the nose with a few background fruits sneaking in as well.
Taste (7/10): Sweet malts and some sugars start things off here, there was some grapefruit in the mix as well though and the beer seemed quite fresh. I got some nice orange and pine flavours around the middle with a bit of caramel thrown in for good measure. The beer was fruit with peaches and apricot making an appearance before biscuit flavours and some bread rounded things off with a few subtle background fruits and grain.
Palate (4/5): Smooth and quite crisp with a good body and nice carbonation levels, there was some sweetness running through the beer too. The balance seemed okay from the beer with some nice fruits being balanced out by the malts and hops, decent stuff from O’Hara’s here.

Overall (14/20): This one was another fairly good offering from O’Hara’s without it really challenging their Irish Stout or India Pale Ale as the brewery’s best. There was some nice biscuit malts and a couple of earthy hops coming through but it wasn’t really as standout offering from the Carlow brewery.
