Mikkeller To From Via (325 of 1001)

Rating: 4.15

Also known as To From Via (or Til Fra Via in Danish), this one will be my twentieth beer from Denmark and my twelfth from Mikkeller alone. I picked this one up recently from Good Spirits Wine & Beer in Glasgow on what was my first trip to the relatively new shop, it being an expansion of their original Good Spirits Co. location just round the corner. The beer was one that I was very glad to stumbled across after heading into the store to pick up another couple of beers I knew they had from the 1001 beers list. The bottle I’ll be reviewing here is the 2015 edition of the beer which is an annual release from the Copenhagen brewery and has been since 2007 and it will be my third Danish beer from the 1001 list, following on from Carlsberg’s Elephant Beer and Mikkeller’s own Beer Geek Breakfast; hopefully this one proves to be as good as the later of those two which was a beer that I quite enjoyed from the brewery but I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Mikkeller To From Via

Appearance (5/5): This one poured pitch black and was topped with a creamy, thumb-sized head that sat a nice tan brown colour in the glass. Head retention was excellent and there was almost no reduction in size over the opening few minutes, although it did eventually settle as a thick surface lacing once I started drinking it; there was some visible sediment at the bottom of the glass too.
Aroma (8/10): Quite a dark beer on the nose with some strong roasted malts and coffee notes opening things up, there was a hint of bitterness early on too. The drink seemed quite rich with some cocoa notes and light grain coming through to accompany a few burnt sugars that added a little sweetness to proceedings. There was some spices and a touch of vanilla towards the end and the nose seemed quite balanced in general.
Taste (8/10): Starting with some strong roasted flavours and dark malts, there is again quite a dark feel to this beer that is reinforced by the touches of espresso and coffee that come through as well. There was some alcohol grains showing early on with this beer as well and a couple of spices from the end of the nose featured too. There was some chocolate and barely towards the end of the beer with a little sugar adding to the sweetness as well.
Palate (4/5): Medium to full-bodied and quite a creamy beer but also a very smooth one, this Mikkeller offering was rich with some hints of sweetness throughout and well-balanced too. There was some nice warming alcohol touches towards the end and it was an easy, enjoyable beer to drink.

Overall (15/20): This one was quite a thick and very strong winter porter that had quite a smooth taste and came through with a nice balance too, although the dark malts and chocolate flavours did seem slightly more pronounced in places. There was some nice bitterness and touches of spice in there along with some smokey flavours and a little warming alcohol, perhaps a touch more than I’d have liked but it was still a solid effort from the brewery.
