Piris Belgian Rye Fruit APA Citra-Mango

Rating: 4.2

Another new local beer that I sampled whilst in Barcelona recently, this one from the Piris brewery is a beer that I ordered when spotting it as one of the two local beers on-tap at the Mikkeller bar in the city when I visited. The beer is a rye beer in the American pale ale style and is one that would likely have caught my attention anyway, but I was more excited to try it given it was a locally brewed beer that I’d be unlikely to find in many places outside the city. Piris appears to be a relatively new player in the Barcelona craft beer scene and I struggled to find much details on the brewery but this particular beer from them is brewed at Instituto de la Cerveza Artesana (I.C.A.) and was introduced in the second half of 2014, since then becoming the brewery’s most popular offering but distribution still appears to be confined to Barcelona and the surrounding areas; hopefully that is something that will change in the near future though.

Piris Belgian Rye Fruit APA Citra-Mango

Appearance (4/5): This one sat quite a bright and cloudy amber in the glass with plenty of orange tinges shinning through. There was a foamy lacing that covered the surface well and left a little stuck to the sides of the glass as drank more of the beer.
Aroma (8/10): Fresh hops and some mango kick things off here but there is some nice pine notes and citrus not far behind either, I also detected a little orange peel in there too. There was a moderate strength aroma to this one on the nose and I got a fruity aroma around the middle with some subtle grapefruit notes and a light bitterness towards the end with some basic sweetness in there too.
Taste (9/10): This one opened up quite fruity tasting with a lot of mango and apricot alongside some peaches, citrus and orange flavours and as a result the beer seemed quite fresh. There was a moderate bitterness running through the beer with some nice touches of passion fruit and pine around the middle before some grassy flavours and a subtle tang brought things to a close.
Palate (4/5): This one was a medium bodied beer that came through quite fresh and with lively carbonation levels as well. There was a nice citrus tang to proceedings and the palate was a moderately bitter one that was very easy to drink and quite refreshing too, plus the balance wasn’t bad either.

Overall (18/20): This one was an excellent beer from start to finish and exactly what I was expecting when ordering the beer, the promised mango and citrus flavours were there in abundance. The beer was fresh, quite lively and had a moderate bitterness running through it that made it quite refreshing and very tasty. There wasn’t much in the way of rye, that I noticed anyway, but that was probably more to do with the fact the beer had such a good balance and the tropical fruit flavours were great. Brilliant stuff from this Barcelona based brewery, this is definitely a beer that I’d like to try again.
