Espiga Hop Collection Series – Mosaic

Rating: 3.75

Another beer from my trip of Barcelona earlier this month and yet another local beer, this one being brewed by Cervesa Espiga who are based in the Sant Llorenç d’Hortons area of Barcelona. The beer is one of two from the brewery that I managed to pick up when I visited the La Vinoteca Voramar wine and beer shop early on in my visit to the city and although I wasn’t particularly impressed with their beer selection, I was quite happy to pick up this one alongside a black IPA from the same brewery (a review of which will follow soon after this one). This particular offering is part of the brewery’s Hop Collection Series, with them also offering Amarillo, Citra & Simcoe version of the beer but sadly I never spotted any of those during my time in Barcelona. Regardless, this one is a beer that I’m glad I managed to pick up since it looks like distribution of the breweries beers is limited to the odd Spanish location and nowhere really beyond that; a real local beer.

Espiga Hop Collection Series - Mosaic

Appearance (4/5): Pale amber in colour and partially cloudy, the beer has a one centimetre, foamy white head on top that holds quite well over the opening minutes and looks slightly bubbly as well.
Aroma (7/10): The aroma here kicks off with some pleasant pale hops and a very noticeable Mosaic aroma that is complimented by the odd hint of citrus and some mango sitting in the background. Touches of apricot and a faint bit of peach also make an appearance and overall the beer is lively on the nose with a good balance and nothing that seemed to overpower.
Taste (7/10): Again starting with a subtle hop presence, this one opens up with a combination of grapefruit and peach alongside the mango and apricot from the nose. Whilst not the strongest tasting American IPA you’ll come across, the beer was far from weak and had a nice fresh pine taste that was backed up with some citrus and various tropical fruits towards the end.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and very well carbonated, this one was a moderately bitter offering that was fresh and lively throughout, with a good hop bitterness too. There was nice variety and some faint sweetness from the fruits and well as a nice citrus tang around the middle and plenty to keep you interested; the balance was pretty good too.

Overall (15/20): This one was a very nice, fresh and lively beer but also one that wasn’t quite as strong as I’d been expecting going in. There was plenty of flavour and the aroma wouldn’t be one you would classify as weak but I felt things could have been slightly more pronounced and the beer would have been a better one as a result. There was a nice combination of tropical fruits, pine and citrus throughout this one with nothing overpowering and overall the beer was an enjoyable one without being a classic.
